Hans Joas, born in 1948, is a sociologist and social philosopher. He teaches as Ernst Troeltsch Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Theology of the Humboldt University in Berlin and is also a professor and member of the Committee on Social Thought at the University of Chicago. From April 2011 to March 2014, he was a Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS). In the summer semester of 2012, Joas was the first academic to hold the newly created visiting professorship of the Joseph Ratzinger Pope Benedict XVI Foundation at the University of Regensburg.
