Rudolf Ditzen alias Hans Fallada was born in Greifswald in 1893. In 1920 he made his debut as an author with the novel Der junge Goedeschal [The young Goedeschal]. The widely translated novel Kleiner Mann – was nun? (title of the English translation: Little Man – What Now?) (1932) made Fallada world-famous. Some sixty years after its publication, his last book Jeder stirbt für sich allein (title of the English translation: Every Man Dies Alone) (1947) became an international bestseller. Hans Fallada died in Berlin in 1947.
