Hans Blumenberg, born in 1920 in Lübeck, studied Philosophy, German philology and Classic philosophy in Paderborn, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, and Kiel. In 1947 he completed his PhD at the University of Kiel, where he received his habilitation degree in 1950. Hans Blumenberg worked as a professor at the University of Hamburg, Gießen, Bochum, and finally Münster, where he retired in 1985. He was a member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz and of the Senate of the German Research Association (DFG). In 1963 he was one of the co-founders of the research group ‘Poetry and Hermeneutics’. Hans Blumenberg passed away in Altenberge near Münster in 1996.
