Gencho Stoev, born in 1925 in Charmanli, was a renowned Bulgarian novelist and journalist. He studied philosophy in Sofia and was active member of the antifascist resistance. His first book, a collection of articles, was published in 1953. In 1965, he wrote Цената на златото (The Price of Gold), one of his most successful novels with which he achieved international recognition. In 2001, Gencho Stoev received the highest order of the Republic of Bulgaria. He died in 2002 in Sofia.
