Ernst Tugendhat

Ernst Tugendhat is regarded as one of the most important representatives of the philosophy of speech analysis in Germany. He was born in 1930 in Brünn/Brno (Czech Republic) as the son of Jewish parents and emigrated in 1938 with his family to Switzerland and in 1941to Venezuela. He studied Classical Philology at Stanford University and then Philosophy in Freiburg. In 1966 he was promoted to professor in Tübingen and taught until 1975 as Professor of Philosophy at the University of Heidelberg. He then worked at the Max Planck Institute and later as Professor of Philosophy at the Free University Berlin. This was followed by positions as visiting professor in Santiago in Chile, Constance, Prague, Gioânia and Porto Alegre. In 1999 he was appointed Honorary Professor at the University of Tübingen. In 2005 he received the Honorary Doctorate of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.
