Ernst Toller was a German playwright, one of the most important ones of the era of the Weimar Republic, and also served as a politician. He was born in 1893 in Samotschin, Province of Posen. In 1933 he emigrated to the USA – with stops in Switzerland, France and England on the way. Among his most well-known publications are the poetry collection The Swallow-Book (1924) and his autobiography, penned in exile, I Was a German (1933).
