Ernst Jandl, born in Vienna in 1925, studied German and English and worked for many years as a high school teacher. From 1954 onward, he befriended and collaborated with Friederike Mayröcker. Jandl was a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts, the German Academy for Language and Literature in Darmstadt, the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and the Austrian Cultural Senate. For his work he received several accolades, including the Peter Huchel Prize (1990), the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art (1990), and the Kleist Award (1993). Ernst Jandl died in Vienna in 2000, shortly before his 75th birthday.
