Botho Strauß, born in Naumburg an der Saale in 1944, studied German language and literature, theatre history and sociology in Cologne and Munich. From 1970 to 1975 he was dramaturge at the Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer in Berlin, where he now lives as a freelance writer. His literary work has been awarded numerous international prizes; in 1987 he was awarded the Jean Paul Prize and in 1989 the Georg Büchner Prize. His plays are among the most widely performed on German stages.
