Arthur Schnitzler was born in Vienna on 15 May 1862. After graduating from high school, he studied medicine. First publications in journals in 1886, first stage manuscript in 1888, first premiere in 1893, first book, the story Sterben, in 1895. Beginning of lifelong friendships with Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Felix Salten, Richard Beer-Hofmann and Hermann Bahr. The individual human being is always at the centre of his stories, all of which are set in Vienna at the turn of the century. Arthur Schnitzler died in Vienna in 1931.
