Stories from the ‘dog years’ of the 20^th century. At the turn of the year 1960/61 three narrators simultaneously write the three parts of the 1963 published novel and so become the chroniclers of the pre-war, war, and post-war ‘dog years’ of our century. Eddi Amsel, the victim, Harry Liebenau, the witness, and Walter Matern, the perpetrator. German shepherd dogs, a Lithuanian wolf as their ancestor, Hitler’s favourite dog, the girls Tulla and Jenny, and a flock of scarecrows accompany them on their odyssey from Danzig to Western Germany, all the way into the subterranean world. The novel ends inside a mine, where the artist Amsel, alias Brauxel, industrially manufactures his scarecrows, which are in high demand all over the world, and so exposes the real world as the underworld.
