Markus Werner, born in 1944 in Eschlikon, studied German, Philosophy and Psychology in Zurich, where he also gained his Ph.D. with a paper on Max Frisch. In 1984 he published his first novel, Zündels Abgang (title of the English translation: Zündel’s Departure). His books have been translated into several languages and have received many prizes, including the Joseph Breitbach Prize (2000), the Johann Peter Hebel Prize (2002), the Schiller Prize of the Swiss Schiller Foundation (2005) and the Bodensee Literary Award of the city of Überlingen (2006). Markus Werner died in 2016.
