The novel Пиреј, long a classic and school reading in Macedonia, tells of the fate of the married couple Jon and Velika from a small village in the mountains, who are caught up in the upheavals of Macedonian history. It is the time of the Balkan wars, the First World War and the years after these drastic experiences. Jon and Velika tell of their lives in ever alternating chapters, and show how they are almost pulverised between political changes, property claims and disputes. A great novel about Macedonia at the beginning of the 20th century.
