From his first attempts at forging signatures to a short-lived career as an employee in a video store and episodes from his life as a comic artist: in “Art Theory versus Ms Goldgruber”, Nicolas Mahler recounts his own life with a detached eye for the absurd. After persistent persuasion, his tax inspector Ms Goldgruber finally concedes: “Well, I guess it is ‘art’ … somehow”, and classifies him not as a commercial graphic designer but as an “artist”. Time and again, he has to justify his work as a comic artist, whether at customs or in academic circles. Friends of dry Viennese humour will not be let down by this volume: Mahler has never been funnier.
