When asked which woman from the world of art history he would like to have dinner with, Umberto Eco named Uta von Naumburg. The narrator of this story feels the same way. On a reading tour in the GDR, at the end of the 1980s, he finds her, the most beautiful woman of the Middle Ages in Naumburg Cathedral, alongside eleven other statues depicting donors. And because anything is possible on paper, he invites all those whose likeness the 13th century artist captured in his lifelike sculptures, to dine in his garden.
