Alles umsonst

The sixth winter of the war is cold at Georgenhof, in the easternmost part Prussia. The front is being pushed back, towards the west, the Red Army is advancing and the people are fleeing from it. But Katharina von Globig, the beautiful head of Georgenhof, tries to ignore reality. She retreats from what is happening around her and takes refuge in books, music and pure idleness.
