Единствен матичен број is a novel about alienation triggered by the sudden loss of one’s family, home, and homeland. It is experienced by Greek Cypriot Nikos Avraam, who in the summer of 1974 is forced to leave his hometown of Varosha due to the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. Lurking in the background of his life story is a family dispute he never talks about. His wife Milka, whom he meets in a hotel where she works as a seasonal worker from Yugoslavia, convinces him to go to Macedonia with her. Macedonia thus becomes his new home, where he finds a new family and stoically surrenders to the monotony of everyday life. The protagonist of the novel is his daughter Katerina Avram, who now devotes herself to uncovering his secret past.
