Vitomil Zupan (1914-1987), the enfant terrible of Slovenian literature, explored his own life in relation to society – or rather the contradictions brought about by this relationship. His publications were both fiercely discussed and bestowed with many prizes. In 1948, Zupan was charged with immorality, attempted murder and anti-state activities. After more than six years in prison, he was pardoned. He worked as a scriptwriter for Slovenian television and was able to publish regularly under his own name again from 1960 onward. His autobiographical novels Menuett für Gitarre (1975), Die Komödie des menschlichen Gewebes (1980) and Levitan became cult books for the younger generations of writers in Slovenia and Yugoslavia.
