Karl-Markus Gauß was born in 1954 in Salzburg, where he went on to study German and history and where he nowadays lives as an author and publisher of the magazine Literatur und Kritik. His books have been translated into many languages and have received several awards, including the Prix Charles Veillon in 1997, the Vilenica Prize in 2005, the Georg Dehio Prize in 2006, the Johann Heinrich Merck Prize, and the Austrian Art Prize for Literature in 2013.
