Judith Schalansky was born in 1980 in Greifswald. She studied art history and communication design and lives now in Berlin as a freelance writer and book designer. Two of her books, Atlas der abgelegenen Inseln (mare, 2009) and the novel Der Hals der Giraffe (Suhrkamp, 2011) were named the most beautiful German books of respective years by the German Book Art Foundation. Since spring 2013, she has been editing the series NATURKUNDEN of the publisher from Berlin Matthes & Seitz.
