Jan Assmann (1938-2024), born in Langelsheim, studied Archaeology, Egyptology and Greek in Munich, Heidelberg, Paris and Göttingen. Since 1976 was Professor of Egyptology in Heidelberg (guest professor in Paris, Jerusalem and the USA). He published numerous books and essays about Egyptian religion, History, Literature and Art, as well as on general Cultural Theory and Religious Knowledge. He was Honorary Doctor at Yale University and at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and was awarded the Max Planck Research Prize (1996), the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class (2006) and the Alfried Krupp Science Prize (2006).
