Gabi Köpp was born in 1929 in Piła, which was then Schneidemühl in West Prussia, and was a war refugee after WWII. She studied physics in Hamburg and became lecturer at the Department of Theoretical Physics of the Technical University of Aachen in 1966. From 1986 to 1994, she was an extra-curricular professor at the same university. He held this position until 1999 on a honorary basis. Outside physics, she became well-known after her autobiography had been published, in which she described her flight from the East during WWII, including numerous rapes by Soviet soldiers. Gabi Köpp died in 2010 in Berlin.
