Ilse Aichinger, born 1921 in Vienna, published her novel The Greater Hope about the war in the city in 1948, and her first famous poems. For her novel, poems, radio plays and other writing – widely translated into many different languages – she was awared several prestigious accolades, including the Prize of Group 47 in 1952, the Petrarca Prize in 1982, the Franz Kafka Prize in 1983 and the Austrian State Prize for Literature in 1995. Ilse Aichinger passed away in 2016, at the age of 95.
