Drago Jančar

Drago Jančar, born in 1948 in Maribor, is one of the most well known contemporary writers of Slovenia. He studied Law, firstly worked as a journalist and finally dedicated himself totally to writing. Due to his literary resistance against the socialist regime of the former Yugoslavia he spent some time in prison. Drago Jančar has published several volumes of stories and novels as well as some of the best Slovenian plays, also collections of essays and polemic texts. He has received several awards for his works, including the renowned Slovenian France Prešeren Prize (1993), the European Prize for Short Prose (1994), the Jean Améry Award for Essay Writing (2007) and the Prix Européen de Littérature (European Prize for Literature) for his life’s work (2012).
