Nada Gašić

Nada Gašić was born in 1950 in Maribor, Slovenia. Since 1952, she has been living in Zagreb. She studied sociology and Croatian language and literature at the University of Zagreb and did her PhD at the University of Prague with a thesis on Croatian-Czech cultural relations. She worked as a lecturer for Croatian language and literature at universities in Prague, Brno, and St. Petersburg, as a collaborator on various dictionary and encyclopedia projects and as a reader in a publishing house. As a translator from Czech, she translated, among others, the novel The Good Soldier Švejk by Jaroslav Hašek. With her first criminal novel Mirna ulica, drvored [Quiet Street, Tree Lined], which is at the same time a brilliant sociological and psychological study of the Zagreb of today, she became instantly famous in Croatia. Her second novel Voda, paučina [Water, Spider Web] was also warmly accepted by critics and readers alike.
