Bernhard Schlink, born in 1944 near Bielefeld, is a retired judge and law professor and lives in Berlin and New York. He earned world fame with his novel Der Vorleser (1995), which was published in English in 1997 as The Reader, and has been translated into 50 other languages. In 2009, Stephen Daldry shot the film featuring Kate Winslet, David Cross und Ralph Fiennes after the book.
