Hans Georg Beck was born in 1910 in Schneizlreuth. After ‘A’ Levels he became a monk at the Benedictine monastery of Scheyern. From 1930 to 1937 he studied Philosophy, Catholic Theology and Byzantine Studies in Munich and Rome and obtained his Ph.D. In 1944 he left the order and from 1950 worked as an Assistant Professor in Byzantine Studies. In 1960, as the successor to Franz Dölger, he took over the Chair in Byzantine Studies and Modern Greek Philology at Munich University. He has received many awards and honours for his work, including The Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1982) and The Bavarian Maximilian Order for Arts and Sciences (1988). He was a Member of The Bavarian Academy of Sciences and correspondent member of several foreign academies.
