Aleksandar Tišma

Aleksandar Tišma was born in 1924 in Horgoš, Vojvodina. He studied English Philology and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. He is author of numerous novels, stories, poetry collections, and theatre plays, as well as translations from the Hungarian and the German. Between 1945 and 1949 he worked as a journalist for the newspapers Slobodna Vojvodina and Borba, after that he was an editor for the publishing house Matica srpska in Novi Sad until 1981. Aleksandar Tišma’s work has been translated into 20 languages and has been awarded prizes both at home as well as abroad, including the NIN Award in 1977, the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair in 1996, the Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 1996, and the National Order of the Legion of Honour. Apart from that he was a regular member of the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts and a member of the Academy of Arts in Berlin. Aleksandar Tišma died on 15^th February 2003 in Novi Sad.
