In Levitan, Vitomil Zupan writes about his years in prison after the Second World War, when he was taken “out of circulation” for being immoral, decadent and politically unpredictable. The explosive text, completed in 1970, was not published until 1982. In it, crude jokes and megalomanic erotic fantasies merge with profound theoretical reflections. Clear-sighted, almost loving depictions of his fellow prisoners and their life stories alternate with furious, damning condemnations of society and its institutions.
