Mikael Ross, born in Munich in 1984, met the Belgian writer and illustrator Nicolas Wouters during a year abroad at the Brussels School of Bande Dessinée, ESA Saint-Luc. They shared a fascination for punk and subcultures. Together, the two wrote and drew the graphic novel “Les pieds dans le béton” (2013), which follows its two restless protagonists through the Berlin squatter scene of the 1980s. The book was published in German in 2014 under the title “Lauter Leben!”. Further graphic novels followed. After two years of research in Neuerkerode, the illustrator ventured into new territory with his graphic novel “Der Umfall” (2018) where he wrote about the lows and highs of a young man with a mental disability. In 2020, he won the Max & Moritz Award for the “Best German-language Comic” for the book.
