It is not love at first sight, but rather the promise of reliability: two people, close and familiar to each other like siblings. The closeness is so strong that it survives the dark sides of their love and marriage, infidelity, their often mutually exclusive obsessions and even the seemingly final separation. Now, many years later, it seems like there is a chance to start all over again. Then the unthinkable happens. Jerome dies. Desperate, the abandoned narrator tries to rebel against the reality of death. Tries to bring the dead man back for a last word, a last sign of love. More and more she clings to the memories of the last encounter, the last moments together, the last words, spoken when they said good bye at Boston airport.
