Maria Lazar (1895–1948) was working as a translator since the 20s and wrote for several renowned Austrian, Scandinavian and Swiss newspapers. Due to the worsening political climate, she left Austria with her daughter in 1933, joining Bertolt Brecht and Helene Weigen in exile in Denmark. In 1939, she escaped to Sweden. In 1948, after a long battle with a chronic illness, she committed suicide. Her varied and brave writings were already forgotten before 1945.
